The Ottoman Empire was founded in 1299 by Osman I, who was a Turkish tribal leader based in Anatolia. From there, the empire expanded rapidly, conquering much of Southeast Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa over the ensuing centuries. At its height in the 16th and 17th centuries, the Ottoman Empire was one of the largest and most powerful empires in the world, with a population of over 30 million people across three continents.
The Empire lasted until the end of World War I, when it was dissolved by the victorious Allied powers. In the centuries leading up to its downfall, the Ottoman Empire had been weakened by a combination of internal corruption, external pressures from competing European powers, and technological and cultural stagnation.
Despite these challenges, the Ottoman Empire left a lasting impact on world history. Its administrative and legal systems, as well as its artistic and cultural achievements, continue to influence the modern world today.
