Can you tell the weather by the behavior of animals?

For example, birds may fly lower to the ground or gather in large numbers before a storm to protect themselves from the high winds, while cows may lay down before a thunderstorm arrives. Animals may also eat more before a cold snap, which can indicate an impending drop in temperature.
