The movement and interaction of air masses also play a key role in shaping regional climate. The prevailing air masses that dominate a region can determine the temperature and precipitation patterns of that area. For instance, the polar front jet stream, which is the boundary between cold and warm air masses, plays a key role in determining the weather patterns of the Northern Hemisphere. When it shifts southward, it can cause cold air outbreaks and snowstorms in North America and Europe.
