What are the differences between Orthodox and Reform Judaism?
Orthodox and Reform Judaism are two of the most prominent denominations of Judaism. They have significant differences in their beliefs, practices, and interpretation of religious texts.
Orthodox Judaism adheres to traditional Jewish practices and beliefs, which include strict observance of Jewish law, or halakha, as it has been passed down through generations. The Orthodox believe that the Torah is divine and is the word of God that was given to Moses on Mount Sinai. They interpret Jewish laws literally and follow them strictly. They also segregate men and women during worship services, with women sitting in a separate area.
Reform Judaism, on the other hand, takes a more liberal approach to Jewish practices and beliefs. They believe that the Torah is a human document, written by humans in response to their understanding of God. They interpret the laws more metaphorically and focus on the ethical and moral aspects of Judaism. Reform Jews also believe in the equality of men and women in all aspects of religious life and reject gender segregation during worship services.
There are also differences in the liturgy, or order of worship, between Orthodox and Reform Judaism. Orthodox worship services are conducted in Hebrew and follow a strict order, while Reform services are conducted in the language of the country in which they are held and are less formal.
