The Barbary Macaque, also known as the Barbary ape, is a species of macaque native to the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco. They are one of the only primate species that can be found outside of Asia. Barbary Macaques are the only free-living primates in Europe and are found in the wild only in Gibraltar, where they were introduced by the Moors in the Middle Ages.

Barbary Macaques are known for their distinctive appearance and playful behavior. They have long, brown fur, broad nostrils, and a hairless face. Their tails are about the same length as their bodies and serve as a balancing aid. They are a popular tourist attraction in Gibraltar, where they are often seen playing with tourists and stealing food.

Unfortunately, the Barbary Macaque is an endangered species. Habitat destruction, hunting, and the illegal pet trade have all contributed to their decline. Conservation efforts are underway in Morocco and Algeria to protect the remaining populations.
