What is the difference between the Senate and the House of Representatives?
The United States Congress is a bicameral legislature, meaning that it has two separate chambers: the Senate and the House of Representatives. Both chambers are responsible for passing federal laws, but they have distinct roles and powers.
The Senate
The Senate is composed of two senators from each state, regardless of the state's population. There are currently 100 senators in the Senate. Senators are elected to six-year terms, and one-third of the Senate is up for election every two years. The Senate has several unique powers, including the ability to approve presidential appointments, ratify treaties, and conduct impeachment trials.
The House of Representatives
The House of Representatives is composed of representatives from each state, with the number of representatives determined by the state's population. There are currently 435 representatives in the House of Representatives. Representatives are elected to two-year terms, and all seats in the House are up for election every two years. The House has several unique powers, including the ability to initiate revenue bills and impeach federal officials.
Overall, the Senate is generally considered to be the more prestigious chamber of Congress, with longer terms, fewer members, and more exclusive powers. The House of Representatives, on the other hand, is generally considered to be the more democratic chamber, with more members, shorter terms, and a closer representation of the American people.
