What is the function of the United States Supreme Court?
The United States Supreme Court is the highest court in the federal judiciary system of the United States. Its function is to interpret the Constitution and federal law, and to act as the final arbiter of disputes between states and between individuals and the federal government. The Supreme Court also has the power of judicial review, meaning that it can declare laws passed by Congress or actions taken by the executive branch unconstitutional and therefore invalid.
The Supreme Court is made up of nine justices who are appointed for life by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate. The Chief Justice is considered the leader of the Court and presides over any impeachment trials of the President of the United States in the Senate.
