What is the greenhouse effect and its role in climate change?
The greenhouse effect is a natural process that occurs when certain gases in the Earth's atmosphere, also known as greenhouse gases, trap heat from the sun and keep the planet warm enough to sustain life. These greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), water vapor, and others. Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth would be too cold to support most forms of life.
However, human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, have caused a significant increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, leading to an enhanced greenhouse effect and causing global temperatures to rise. This phenomenon is known as climate change or global warming.
The increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere leads to more heat being trapped, which causes the Earth's surface temperature to rise. This rise in temperature has numerous effects on the planet, including melting of polar ice caps, rising sea levels, more frequent and severe weather events, changes in precipitation patterns, and more.
To address the issue of climate change, it is important to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and switch to cleaner sources of energy. This includes actions such as using renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, reducing waste, and planting trees and other vegetation to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere.
