What is the One Ring?
The One Ring is a fictional artifact in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic high fantasy novel 'The Lord of the Rings'. It is also known as the Ruling Ring or the Ring of Power, and is described as an object of immense power that was created by the Dark Lord Sauron to conquer and rule Middle-earth. The One Ring has the power to control the other Rings of Power and to give its wearer immense power, but at a great cost: it corrupts its wearer and gradually turns them into a wraith-like being under Sauron's control.
In 'The Lord of the Rings', the main character Frodo Baggins is entrusted with the task of destroying the One Ring by throwing it into the fires of Mount Doom, the only place where it can be destroyed. The quest to destroy the Ring is a central plot point in the novel and is often regarded as one of the greatest works of fantasy literature ever written.
