What is the story behind the myth of the ''Eternal Flames'' in Mount Chimaera?
The myth of the 'Eternal Flames' in Mount Chimaera is an ancient Greek legend that dates back to the 5th century BC. According to the myth, the fire-breathing monster Chimera once lived on this mountain and terrorized the nearby cities. The legend tells of a young warrior, Bellerophon, who was sent to slay the beast with the help of the winged horse Pegasus.
After killing the Chimera, Bellerophon tried to extinguish the flames that were coming out of the beast's mouth by covering it with soil. However, the flames continued to burn and became a permanent feature of the mountain. The flames are said to be eternal and have been burning for over 2,000 years.
Today, the eternal flames of Mount Chimaera are a popular tourist attraction in Turkey. The flames are caused by the combustion of natural gas seeping through the cracks in the rocks. Visitors can hike up the mountain and see the flames up close.
