Lake Kariba is officially the world's largest man-made lake by volume, having been created with the construction of Kariba Dam in the late 1950s. Kariba Dam is a hydroelectric dam and concrete gravity dam on the Zambezi River at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
When it was constructed, it displaced around 57,000 people, and now the lake provides a source of hydroelectric power, as well as being an important fishing and tourism attraction for the region.
As of 2018, Lake Kariba had a maximum capacity of roughly 185 billion cubic meters, making it the largest artificial lake in the world by volume. Its surface area is approximately 5,580 square kilometers, and it stretches about 223 kilometers in length and 40 kilometers in width at its widest point.
