On July 16, 2015, a gunman opened fire at two military installations in Chattanooga, Tennessee, killing four Marines and a Navy sailor. The gunman, who was later identified as 24-year-old Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, was also killed during the attack.
Abdulazeez, a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Kuwait, had been struggling with depression, drug abuse, and financial problems in the months leading up to the shooting. Investigators later discovered that he had been radicalized and inspired by extremist Islamist ideology, and had been researching and watching propaganda videos online.
