What was the role of the Turkish Grand National Assembly in the Turkish War of Independence?
The Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA) played a critical role in the Turkish War of Independence, which lasted from 1919 to 1923. Following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, Turkey was occupied by Allied powers, who aimed to divide the country and impose harsh terms on the Ottoman government.
In response, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, a military officer and political leader, formed the TGNA in 1920 as a provisional government to resist the Allied occupation and assert Turkish sovereignty. The TGNA was based in Ankara, which became the de facto capital of Turkey.
Under Atatürk's leadership, the TGNA rallied support for the Turkish resistance movement and organized military campaigns against the occupying powers. In 1922, Turkish forces achieved a decisive victory against Greek forces in western Anatolia, which marked a turning point in the war.
In 1923, the TGNA negotiated the Treaty of Lausanne, which recognized Turkish sovereignty and established the borders of modern Turkey. Atatürk became the first president of the Republic of Turkey, which was established in 1923.
