Who played the first Doctor?
The first actor to play the Doctor in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who was William Hartnell. Hartnell played the Doctor from the show's inception in 1963 until 1966.
Before landing the role, Hartnell had a long and distinguished career in film and television, often playing tough, no-nonsense characters. However, his portrayal of the quirky, eccentric Time Lord won the hearts of audiences and cemented the character's place in pop culture history.
Hartnell's run as the Doctor was cut short due to his declining health, and he was replaced by Patrick Troughton. However, Hartnell returned to the role of the First Doctor for the show's tenth anniversary special, The Three Doctors, in 1973.
