Emperor Andronikos I Komnenos was the Byzantine Emperor from 1183 to 1185. He was born in 1118 and was a member of the Komnenos dynasty. Andronikos was a talented military commander and an able administrator. He served as the governor of several provinces and was responsible for a number of successful campaigns against the Seljuk Turks.
Andronikos' reign was marked by political unrest and violence. He came to power after leading a coup against his predecessor, Alexios II. Despite his accomplishments, Andronikos is best known for his brutality and cruelty. He was notorious for his harsh punishments and his persecution of the aristocracy. He ordered the execution of many high-ranking officials and confiscated their property. His cruelty and excesses eventually led to a popular uprising, and he was overthrown and killed in 1185.
