Emperor Nikephoros II Phokas was a Byzantine Emperor who reigned from 963 to 969 AD. He was born around the year 912 AD in Cappadocia, in modern-day Turkey. Nikephoros II Phokas was a successful military commander before ascending to the throne, and his military accomplishments continued during his reign as Emperor.

One of his greatest achievements was the reconquest of the island of Crete from the Arabs in 961 AD. He also fought against the Kievan Rus' and the Bulgarians, and he defeated the latter in several battles. In addition to his military successes, Nikephoros II Phokas also implemented reforms that strengthened the Byzantine Empire. He reorganized the administration of the Empire and strengthened the position of the aristocracy, which helped to stabilize the Empire.

However, Nikephoros II Phokas was also known for his harsh policies and his intolerance towards non-Christians. He persecuted Jews and Muslims, and he enforced strict laws regarding blasphemy and religious dissent. Despite his achievements, he was not well-liked by his people, and his reign ended with his assassination in 969 AD.
