Who was the French general who served under Charles de Gaulle?

One of the most famous generals to serve under Charles de Gaulle was Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque. He was born on November 22, 1902, and became a French general during World War II. He served in both the French and Free French armies, and was one of the few French generals to lead troops on the ground during the war. He played a key role in the liberation of Paris in August 1944 and in the campaign in Alsace-Lorraine.

Leclerc was initially skeptical of Charles de Gaulle and his Free French movement, but he eventually joined forces with him in Africa. Together they led the 2nd Armored Division on a successful campaign against the Germans, and Leclerc was one of the first to enter Paris upon its liberation. He was later named military governor of Paris and given the rank of general.

After the war, Leclerc served as the governor-general of French Equatorial Africa and was later appointed inspector general of the French Army. He died in an airplane crash in 1947, but his legacy as a skilled military leader and a hero of the Free French forces lives on.
