Following Napoleon Bonaparte's defeat and abdication in 1814, the French monarchy was restored with the ascension of Louis XVIII to the throne. However, Napoleon escaped from his exile on the island of Elba in 1815 and returned to France, sparking the Hundred Days and his eventual defeat at the Battle of Waterloo. After Napoleon's second abdication, Louis XVIII was restored to the throne once again.
