Jean Jaurès, a prominent French socialist leader and the founder of French newspaper L'Humanité, was assassinated in Paris on July 31, 1914. Jaurès was a vocal opponent of World War I and had been working to prevent France from entering the conflict. He was shot by a nationalist fanatic named Raoul Villain, who was later acquitted due to mental illness.
