The 1880s was a decade of rapid progress for association football, and the game spread rapidly throughout Europe and the world. Several clubs rose to prominence during this decade, but the most successful were The Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End. Blackburn Rovers were the first team to win three consecutive FA Cups, in addition to a League Championship in 1884-85. Preston North End became the first team to win the League Championship without losing a single match in the 1888-89 season.
