How do I dispute errors on my credit report?
If you find errors on your credit report, it's important to take steps to correct them as soon as possible. Here's how to dispute errors on your credit report:
- Get a copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion). You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report from each bureau once every 12 months.
- Review each credit report carefully to identify any errors or inaccuracies.
- Write a letter to the credit bureau(s) that issued the report(s) containing the errors. Be sure to include your name and address, a clear description of the error(s), and any supporting documentation you have to prove that the information is inaccurate.
- Send the letter and supporting documentation to the credit bureau(s) by certified mail, return receipt requested.
- Wait for a response from the credit bureau(s). They have 30 days to investigate your dispute and respond to you in writing.
- If the credit bureau(s) agrees that there is an error on your report, they must correct it and send you an updated copy of your credit report.
- If the credit bureau(s) does not agree that there is an error on your report, you can still request that a statement of dispute be included in your credit file.
