Proxima Centauri was discovered in 1915 by the Scottish astronomer Robert Innes. It was not until the 1960s that astronomers were able to determine its proximity to our solar system, thanks to advances in telescope technology.
While Proxima Centauri is the closest star to our sun, it is not visible to the naked eye from Earth. It is part of a triple star system that includes two brighter stars, Alpha Centauri A and B.
