Both peaks are dormant volcanoes, with the last recorded eruption occurring around 50 A.D.
The Caucasus Mountains stretch between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, forming the border between Russia and Georgia. Mount Elbrus is part of the greater Caucasus range.
