What is the most common type of wine consumed in Turkey?
Turkey has a long history of wine producing, and currently has two recognized wine regions; Thrace and Aegean. Although Turkey is not widely known for its wine, the country produces a variety of high-quality wines, with flavors that are unique to the region.
The most commonly consumed wine in Turkey is red wine. According to the Turkish Statistical Institute, in 2019, red wine accounted for 60% of the total wine consumption in the country, followed by white wine (38%) and rosé (2%). The most popular red wine variety consumed in Turkey is Okuzgozu, which is indigenous to the Elazig region located in the eastern part of Turkey. Other popular red wine varieties include Boğazkere, Öküzgözü, Kalecik Karası, and Shiraz.
In addition to these indigenous varieties, many international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are also grown in Turkey. Besides, Turkey also produces sparkling wine, which is becoming increasingly popular among the younger generation in the country.
