The lighthouse tower originally had a fourth-order Fresnel lens which produced a fixed white light, but it was replaced with a modern optic in the 1900s.
Today, the South Haven Lighthouse is a popular tourist attraction and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the lighthouse and keeper's house during the summer months, and climb to the top of the tower for a panoramic view of Lake Michigan and the surrounding area.
