What are the different types of commercial aircraft engines?
Commercial aircraft engines are classified into two categories, i.e., jet engines and turboprop engines. Both of these engines differ in their operation, design, and purpose. Let's dive into more detail on both of these types of engines.
Jet engines
Jet engines are also known as gas turbines as they operate on the Brayton cycle where air is compressed, combusted, and then expelled through a nozzle to create thrust. The main types of jet engines are:
- Turbojet engines: This type of engine is known for its high speeds and has a simple construction. They are mostly used in military aircraft.
- Turbofan engines: These engines create a large amount of thrust and are most commonly used in commercial aircraft. They are fuel-efficient and quieter than other engines.
- Turboprop engines: These engines are used in smaller aircraft and have a propeller attached to the front of the engine. They are fuel-efficient but not as fast as jet engines. They are mostly used in regional aircraft.
Turboprop engines
Turboprop engines are similar to jet engines as they both operate on the same principles of compressing air, adding fuel, combustion, and then expelling it through a nozzle. However, turboprop engines use more fuel-efficient propellers to create thrust, which results in lower speeds but better fuel economy.
