What is the education system like in China?

The education system in China is different from that in most western countries. Education in China is only mandatory through the primary and middle school stages, which are usually completed by the time a student is 15 years old. After that, there are three main options for students to continue their education:

1. Senior high school
2. Vocational school or technical school
3. University or college

The senior high school stage typically lasts three years, and students must take a national exam called the ‘gaokao’ to progress to tertiary-education. Vocational schools and technical schools offer a range of practical courses that are designed to prepare students for specific careers. Higher-education is widely regarded as the key to success in China, with university education being a top priority for most families.

Chinese universities and colleges have a reputation for being highly academic, with a particular focus on science, engineering and mathematics subjects. Competition for places is fierce, and there is considerable pressure on students to succeed. Many Chinese students attend extra coaching classes or employ private tutors to help them prepare for exams.
